Settling-in sessions: what to expect in your child's first weeks

Most children have two or three short visits before their first full session. The first is usually an hour with you staying in the room, the second a little longer with you leaving for a short time, and the third closer to a normal session.

We take the pace from your child, not the calendar. Some children are ready after two visits; others need a fortnight of shorter days. Both are completely normal.

Keep goodbyes short, warm and certain — a hug, a clear "I'll be back after lunch", and then go. Long goodbyes make it harder. Send a comforter or a family photo, and tell us the words your child uses for milk, sleep and the toilet.

You'll get photos and updates through our family app during the session, and you can ring the nursery any time you want reassurance.

Most of our children arrive with no Welsh at all, including babies who aren't talking yet. Our staff use Welsh alongside gesture, song and routine, so children understand long before they speak. Nothing about settling-in is harder because the day is in Welsh.
